Khushu’ (humility and focused attention) is the fear of Allah Almighty that manifests in the heart and shows its effects on the body. It is the heart’s awareness when it is devoted to God’s obedience, resulting in both external and internal calmness.
Khushu’ (humility and focused attention) during Prayer
Khushu’ (humility and focused attention) is essential to prayer; it is its core essence. Without reverence, worshippers may not fully receive the rewards of their prayers. True reverence can only be achieved by those who dedicate their hearts to prayer, prioritizing it above all else. When they do this, prayer becomes a source of comfort and the apple of their eye.
Who are certain that they will meet their Lord and that they will return to Him.
Quran Soura 23 Aya 1-3 :
قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ
Certainly will the believers have succeeded:
الَّذِينَ هُمْ فِي صَلَاتِهِمْ خَاشِعُونَ
They who are during their prayer humbly submissive
وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ عَنِ اللَّغْوِ مُعْرِضُونَ
And they who turn away from ill speech
Khushu’ (humility and focused attention) when remembering Allah
One of the places where Khushu’ is particularly emphasized is in the remembrance of God and when reading the Holy Quran. The first quality that leads to complete faith is having a deep Khushu’ in the heart at the mention of God. This feeling arises from the awareness of God’s greatness and majesty, as well as the remembrance of His promises and potential punishment. As a result, the heart feels fear, and the soul experiences disturbance.
Has the time not come for those who have believed that their hearts should become humbly submissive at the remembrance of Allah and what has come down of the truth? And let them not be like those who were given the Scripture before, and a long period passed over them, so their hearts hardened; and many of them are defiantly disobedient.
The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts become fearful, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith; and upon their Lord they rely -
Who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts are fearful, and [to] the patient over what has afflicted them, and the establishers of prayer and those who spend from what We have provided them.
Allah has sent down the best statement: a consistent Book wherein is reiteration. The skins shiver therefrom of those who fear their Lord; then their skins and their hearts relax at the remembrance of Allah. That is the guidance of Allah by which He guides whom He wills. And one whom Allah leaves astray - for him there is no guide.
If We had sent down this Qur’an upon a mountain, you would have seen it humbled and coming apart from fear of Allah. And these examples We present to the people that perhaps they will give thought.
Khushu’ (humility and focused attention) for God is one of the qualities of the righteous
And indeed, among the People of the Scripture are those who believe in Allah and what was revealed to you and what was revealed to them, [being] humbly submissive to Allah. They do not exchange the verses of Allah for a small price. Those will have their reward with their Lord. Indeed, Allah is swift in account.
So We responded to him, and We gave to him John, and amended for him his wife. Indeed, they used to hasten to good deeds and supplicate Us in hope and fear, and they were to Us humbly submissive.
Indeed, the Muslim men and Muslim women, the believing men and believing women, the obedient men and obedient women, the truthful men and truthful women, the patient men and patient women, the humble men and humble women, the charitable men and charitable women, the fasting men and fasting women, the men who guard their private parts and the women who do so, and the men who remember Allah often and the women who do so - for them Allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward.
