Quran Verses on Backbiting and Gossip
Backbiting and gossiping are among the major sins forbidden by the Holy Quran, and backbiting has been likened to eating the flesh of a dead brother, this article reviews Quranic verses that prohibit backbiting and gossiping.
Quran Soura 49 Aya 12 :
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اجْتَنِبُوا كَثِيرًا مِّنَ الظَّنِّ إِنَّ بَعْضَ الظَّنِّ إِثْمٌ ۖ وَلَا تَجَسَّسُوا وَلَا يَغْتَب بَّعْضُكُم بَعْضًا ۚ أَيُحِبُّ أَحَدُكُمْ أَن يَأْكُلَ لَحْمَ أَخِيهِ مَيْتًا فَكَرِهْتُمُوهُ ۚ وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَوَّابٌ رَّحِيمٌ
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.
Quran Soura 104 Aya 1 :
وَيْلٌ لِّكُلِّ هُمَزَةٍ لُّمَزَةٍ
Woe to every scorner and mocker
Quran Soura 68 Aya 10-12 :
وَلَا تُطِعْ كُلَّ حَلَّافٍ مَّهِينٍ
And do not obey every worthless habitual swearer
هَمَّازٍ مَّشَّاءٍ بِنَمِيمٍ
[And] scorner, going about with malicious gossip -
مَّنَّاعٍ لِّلْخَيْرِ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ
A preventer of good, transgressing and sinful,
